Mayor Rodrigo Duterte maintained that his statement regarding the 1989 gang rape of Australian missionary worker Jaqueline Hamill was not a joke and refused to apologize for his controversial remarks.
“It was not a joke. I said it as a narrative. I was not smiling. “Do not make me apologize for something which I did not do,” said Duterte during an interview with the members of the media.
Duterte said he is not afraid if his remarks would cost him the presidency.
It’s a matter of principle. I said it in the heat of anger. I am even willing to lose the presidency. Do not make me apologize for something which I did which was called for at that moment,” added Duterte.
“No apologies to any particular entity or person, to the Filipino people, Yes because it happened.” said Duterte.
