Tito Sotto clarifies ‘victim-shaming’ remark on “Eat Bulaga’

Senator Tito Sotto defended the controversial comment he made on the noontime variety show ‘Eat Bulaga’ after it drew outrage from netizens on social media which prompted an MTRCB inquiry on the July 9 episode with show’s executives.

According to Sen. Sotto in his interview on TV 5’s Aksyon Tonite, he only meant that a woman should not drink with men other than her husband.

“It was a simple reaction saying that a married lady should not be out at night having shots [or drinking] with men other than her husband,” the senator said.

Last July 11, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) sent a letter calling the ‘Eat Bulaga’ executives for a conference over Sotto’s remarks which were “alleged to be insensitive to women.”

In a statement made by Sotto to Rappler.com, the senator welcomed the MTRCB inquiry and confidently said that the regulatory board will be able to see that his intention was to protect the institution of marriage.

“Anyway, it’s a welcome development if MTRCB looks into [the] matter. They will see that I was merely moralizing for the protection of [the] institution of marriage,” Sotto told Rappler.

Meanwhile, the MTRCB emphasized that its jurisdiction is over programs and not over hosts or personalities after some netizens called for Sen. Sotto’s suspension from ‘Eat Bulaga’.
